Cardinals Drop 2-1 Decision Against Oakland
October 19, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Louisville outshot Oakland 23-6, but came up one goal short.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss against Oakland on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The loss is just the second of the season for the Cardinals at home, who had won six straight at Lynn Stadium entering Tuesday.
Oakland (7-5-2) struck twice in a span of two minutes and 22 seconds midway through the first half and it would prove to be all it would need. The Golden Grizzlies got on the board in the 19th minute and then added a second in the 21st to open up a 2-0 advantage.
Louisville (9-5-0) took control of play from there and finally broke through in the 44th minute. Pedro Fonseca played a corner into the box that found the heads of Josh Jones and Bryce LeBel, the latter of which put it in the net. It was the first goal of the season for LeBel.
The chances came in large quantities in the second half for the Cardinals, with an early dangerous opportunity coming for Fonseca five minutes in. The forward dribbled in from the right side and his first attempt was saved by a sliding keeper. The rebound fell back at his feet, but his second attempt was saved off the line by the Oakland defense to keep the Golden Grizzlies in front.
The Cardinals continued to fire off shots at the net, but were unable to break through. Louisville outshot Oakland 23-6 on the night and held possession for 67 percent of the contest. UofL also held a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks in the loss.
Louisville wraps up the home portion of its regular season schedule on Friday against NC State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET with Senior Day festivities to take place prior.
