Cardinals Open Hokie Invitational with Three Wins

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams posted three wins on day one of the Hokie Invitational Friday at Virginia Tech's Rector Field House. The meet marks the team's second week of competition of the indoor season.

"We've been able to make some progress since our opener last week. We had outstanding efforts from both squads and we should be able to build upon it tomorrow," said UofL head coach Dale Cowper. "Competition opportunities come at us a little faster than weekly training activities so it's great to see the students continue to progress toward championship level fitness."

For the second straight week, Louisville swept the men's and women's weight throw with Adar Sheere and Makenli Forrest picking up their second straight wins in the event. Sterling Warner-Savage took the men's 60m dash to complete the trio of first place finishes. Along with the wins, six Cardinals recorded personal best performances on the day.

Micah Oberhausen stands in first place in the men's heptathlon with 3166 points after the first day of competition. The junior won the opening event of the meet with a time of 7.04 in the 60m dash. He followed with a personal best leap of 7.21m (23-8), good for second place in the long jump. Oberhausen finished atop the shotput standings with a mark of 14.30m (46-11) and logged another personal best, clearing 1.87m (6-1.5) to finish sixth in the high jump. Freshman Justin Lehmkuhler, competing in his first collegiate heptathlon, registered a personal best 1.93m (6-4) to place second in the high jump.

Senior Makenli Forrest continued her winning streak as she picked up her second consecutive win in the women's weight throw with a season best effort of 20.81m (68-3.25). Senior Halee Hudson placed third in the event with a throw of 19.96m (65-6) and senior Victoria Farley threw a personal best 15.98m (52-5.25) in the event.

On the men's side, junior Adar Sheere took first place in the men's weight throw. His throw of 19.88m (65-2.75) is a career best and marks his second win of the season in the event.

The Cardinals picked up their third win of the day in the men's 60m as Sterling Warner-Savage paced the field with a time of 6.69 after leading all qualifiers with a time of 6.75 in the prelims. Last week Warner-Savage placed first in the 60m preliminary race with a personal-best time of 6.65.

Louisville took two top-four finishes in the women's triple jump. In her first event freshman Riley Burger led the Cardinals in the event coming in third place with a leap of 12.29m (40-4) with fellow freshman Ariel Lawrence coming right behind her in fourth place with a jump of 12.09m (39-8), a new personal best.

UofL again took two of the top four spots in the women's pole vault. Senior Gabriela Leon cleared 4.15m (13-7.25), good for third place while sophomore Auriane Viola cleared 4.00m (13-1.5) to finish fourth; both recording their best performances of the young season.

Sophomore Cayden Spencer-Thompson placed fifth for UofL in the men's triple jump with a season best leap of 15.44m (50-8).

In the men's 60m hurdles, junior Aaron Johnson finished third with a time of 8.30.

Freshman McKenzie Bell placed fifth in her first collegiate 300m with a time of 39.73.
