January 15, 2021 | Men's Golf
Louisville is scheduled to open the season at the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational from Jan.17-19 in Watersound, Fla.
LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The University of Louisville men's golf team has been waiting to return to the course after a shortened 2019-20 season.
The opportunity will be presented Sunday as the program is scheduled to open the spring season at the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational. The three-round tournament will be held from Jan.17-19 at the Camp Creek Golf Club in Watersound, Fla.
Louisville is one of nine teams participating in the tournament. The rest of the all-ACC field includes host Florida State, Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.
This will be the first Louisville action for new head coach Ryan Blagg after the fall portion of the schedule was canceled. Blagg has accumulated over a decade of coaching experience, including stints at Houston Baptist and Baylor, before being named to lead the Louisville program on May 13, 2020.
"We are incredibly excited to be able to compete again," Blagg said. "Our guys have been waiting patiently and I am very proud of how hard they have worked and prepared during the off season."
Blagg hopes to lean on the experience of this team to ease his transition as head coach.
Louisville's lineup will be led by the redshirt senior trio of John Murphy, Trevor Johnson, and Devin Morley, in addition to senior Matthias Schmid and junior Jiri Zuska. Redshirt junior Hugh O'Hare will compete as an individual.
In the shortened 2019-20 season, Murphy was honored as the program's first recipient of the Byron Nelson Award. He set the school's single-season record with a 69.59 scoring average last season and now holds the third-best career scoring average in program history at 71.98. Murphy also became one of four players in program history to win two events in a single season, securing individual titles at the Bearcat Invitational and Dorado Beach Invitational.
Schmid returns to finish out an impressive career, carding a 70.86 stroke average in 35 career events and recording 18 top-10 finishes. He was recently named to the Haskins Award Watch List, an annual award that honors the nation's top collegiate golfer.
Murphy and Schmid enter the season honored in the PGA Tour University Top 25 rankings. Schmid currently sits at No. 18, while Murphy is ranked at No. 23.
The first round tees off on Sunday at 9 a.m. CT with a shotgun start, with the second and final round following on Monday and Tuesday. The live scoring throughout the invitational can be followed on Golfstat.com.
