
Weddle Named Johnny Bench Award Winner for Indiana

University of Louisville softball signee Taryn Weddle has earned the Johnny Bench Award for the state of Indiana.

The annual award is normally based on single-season accomplishments, but this year was decided on career achievements after the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19.

In three seasons at Floyd Central High School, the catcher produced 139 hits with 34 home runs and 124 RBIs. She posted a .471 batting average, a .518 on-base percentage, a .949 slugging percentage and a 1.467 OPS.

As a junior, she batted .495 with a school-record 18 home runs and 50 RBIs and was a 2019 National Fastpitch Coaches Association second team All-American and first team all-region selection. She also earned 2019 ICGSA all-state first team honors and was the News and Tribune Softball Player of the Year.

The Johnny Bench Award was created by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission and dedicated to the Hall of Fame Cincinnati Reds catcher. The honor was expanded in 2019 to include NCAA softball and high school baseball and softball catchers from Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia.
