Pastor Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award Winner for Field Hockey

The University of Louisville's Mercedes Pastor has been named the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award winner for field hockey as announced by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.

Pastor, was one of four finalists for the Class of 2020 Honda Sport Award for Field Hockey. During her junior season, the midfielder from Buenos, Aires, Argentina posted a career-best nine goals and 22 points while helping the Cardinals reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. She was a Longstreth/NFHCA All-America First Team and All-West Region Team selection and was named to the All-ACC first team and ACC All-Tournament team.

The Industrial Engineering major is successful in the classroom as a three-time NFHCA Academic Honor Roll member, earning Scholar of Distinction honors in 2017. She was named to the ACC All-Academic Team in 2018 and is a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member.

Pastor is also one of Louisville field hockey's community service leaders. Among her many local volunteer activities, she is active in the Droplet Water Project, a Kentucky-based non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the global effort to provide access to clean drinking water.

Diverse: Issues In Higher Education sponsors the annual Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards edition as to recognize outstanding minority young men and women who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits.

In addition to their athletic ability, students named 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5, be at least a sophomore academically, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
