Victoria Farley Finds Creative Ways to Stay in Shape
April 14, 2020 | Track & Field
Louisville, Ky. – University of Louisville junior Victoria Farley's love for track and field began at Portage High School in Indiana. She wasn't a varsity thrower her freshman year, then she made an amazing 11-foot jump in the shot put her sophomore year. She went on to win a state title that year.
It is no surprise that when the NCAA cancelled all winter and spring NCAA Championships due to the concerns surrounding the widespread health risks associated with the Covid-19 virus that Farley, like the rest of her team, was disappointed.
"I understand the need for the halt of practice and the season because of the current world conditions," Farley said. "I was definitely upset because outdoor season is always a lot of fun and another opportunity to improve."
As a sophomore, Farley finished 12th in the shot put at the ACC Outdoor Championships and was looking forward to the spring to continue her momentum during the outdoor season and leading up to the postseason. She improved her throw over 5-feet at the ACC Indoor championships from her sophomore to her junior season.
"I really saw some progress across the whole team," said Farley. "Practices were going well transitioning from the indoor season. It was really exciting heading into our outdoor season."
Farley is no stranger to hard work and knows what it takes to continue to improve. The two-time state champion is having to adjust to life at home and find new ways to stay in shape, turning to her creative side to get things done.
"Since my gym is closed and I don't own any traditional lifting equipment," said Farley. "I've been working out outside and using a sandbag with varying weights in it and supplementing those workouts with jumping rope, doing med ball heaves, taking walks outside and throwing or doing drills out of my driveway. I've also been eating healthy meals and hydrating."
While the circumstances of the world have not been great, Farley is making the best of her situation by spending her free time doing crafts and spending more time with her family. She also currently binge watching Grey's Anatomy on Netflix and any home improvement shows.
"I really miss having a set routine and being around my friends and teammates," Farley stated.
Farley's competitive spirit will have her ready for her best season as a Cardinal when everything returns to normal.
