Matthias Schmid is the first honoree since 2016.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville junior Matthias Schmid was named to the European Palmer Cup team on Wednesday evening, becoming the first player in school history to make the team for the second-straight season.
The Palmer Cup is an annual Ryder Cup-style competition between college-aged golfers from the United States and Europe. This year's Palmer Cup will be held July 3-5 in Clare, Ireland, at the Lahinch Golf Club.
"Becoming the first player in school history to win this honor twice is a tremendous accomplishment for Matthias," head coach Mark Crabtree said. "This is just a prestigious event and a great reward for him. It's just a testament to how hard he's work over the last three seasons, and I'm proud that he will be representing the University of Louisville."
Schmid is only the third Louisville golfer to play in the Palmer Cup and also represented the Cardinals in the 2019 event.
A native of Maxhuette, Germany, Schmid stands second on the team in stroke average at 69.44, which is also one of the best totals in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The junior has posted two top-five finishes and five in the top 10 this season, including a season best second-place finish at the Bearcat Invitational. Schmid fired a 14-under-par, finishing three shots behind teammate John Murphy.
A preseason All-American, Schmid has produced 11 top-5 finishes over the last three seasons, including one win.
In 1997, Arnold Palmer was approached by the Golf Coaches Association of America regarding lending his name to an international collegiate event between the United States and Great Britain and Ireland. The event would use a Ryder Cup-style format and bring together the top eight collegiate players in the United States against their counterparts from GB&I. Palmer, a former collegiate player himself, has been called America's greatest Ambassador for the game of golf. With his blessing and the support of the Arnold Palmer Golf Company, the inaugural event was played at his own Bay Hill Club in Florida in June 1997.
