Leon Leads the Cardinals with a Win at the Meyo Invitational
February 08, 2020 | Track & Field
South Bend, Ind. – The University of Louisville's Gabriela Leon led a small group from track and field this weekend at the Meyo Invitational held on Notre Dame's campus.
"It was small group competing this weekend and they were able to make some terrific progress," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Gabby Leon led the way with a new school record in the pole vault at 4.32m/14'2". The mark moves her inside the top 10 nationally and puts her in a great position as the championship segment of our season quickly approaches."
Leon broke her school record, clearing a height of 4.32m/14-2 to win the women's pole vault. She passed her previous record of 4.31m/14-1.75 set last season at the Notre Dame Invitational. The win is her third of the season out of four meets.
Sophomore Aliyah Welter finished third with a height of 3.91m/12-10. Welter has finished in the top five of all four meets this season in the pole vault. Freshman Auriane Viola cleared a collegiate best of 3.91m/12-10 to finish fifth.
"Jeremiah Willis was able to build some consistency on the runway in the long jump with three attempts going over 24 feet on the day," said Cowper.
Freshman Jeremiah Willis finished second in the long jump. Willis leaped a collegiate best of 7.57m/24-10.
"The team will split in three directions next weekend before coming back together at the ACC Championships at the end of the month," said Cowper.
