LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball program had a pair of student-athletes on the preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list released by USA Baseball on Thursday.
Sophomore Alex Binelas and junior Reid Detmers were on the initial watch list for the award, given out annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country. Louisville is one of 12 schools to have multiple players on the 55-man list.
Louisville has now had 13 student-athletes on the preseason watch list, with Brendan McKay taking home the Golden Spikes Award in 2017.
The 43rd Golden Spikes Award will be presented on June 11 in Omaha, Neb., for the second consecutive year.
A freshman All-American in 2019, Binelas led the Cardinals with 14 home runs while hitting .291 and driving in 59. The Oak Creek, Wis., native has garnered preseason All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, D1Baseball, NCBWA and Perfect Game.
Detmers, a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist last season, was the 2019 ACC Pitcher of the Year after posting a 13-4 record with a 2.78 ERA and UofL record 167 strikeouts. Detmers has been named to the preseason All-America teams of all five major preseason publications.
The top-ranked Cardinals open the 2020 season Friday with a three-game series on the road at No. 18 Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. Louisville's home opener is set for Feb. 19 against Wright State at Jim Patterson Stadium.
