Carefully planned slate will prepare Cards for postseason
The University of Louisville Rowing program has announced its schedule for the spring of 2021 according to Derek Copeland, UofL head coach.
Â
"We are thankful to the Louisville administrators and support staff who have worked behind the scenes to help create this year's schedule. It is built to give us the best racing, at the best times, with a high probability of the race safely occurring," said Copeland.
Â
The Cardinals' schedule features three head-to-head competitions, a berth in the Big Ten Invitational, and will host the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational. UofL will also gear up for competition in Oak Ridge during their spring training trip.
Â
First up on the slate will be a trip to Dallas on Feb. 19-20. Â Â Â
Â
"Similar to last year, we will bring a partial squad to SMU and start the season with racing in fours," said Copeland.
Â
The Cards will make back-to-back trips to Oak Ridge including UofL's 12-team regatta, the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite. Louisville will round out March competitions with a day trip up to Eagle Creek in Indianapolis to race Notre Dame.
Â
The Cardinals are looking forward to racing in the Big Ten Invitational in early April.
Â
"The Big 10 Invite will be a huge opportunity to show our speed," said Copeland. Â "It is occurring at a location less than two hours away and will include the entire Big 10 as well as key invitees who will all be vying for NCAA Championship selection. We are grateful for the invitation."
Â
Louisville's yearly trip to Michigan will occur the first weekend in May, two weeks before the ACC Championships in Clemson.
Â
"This schedule will offer many opportunities to demonstrate how far the program has come in the last couple of years," said Copeland. Â "Although spectators will be unlikely this year, we are sure that our fans and our families will get a taste of our speed gains."
Â
The 21st ACC Rowing Championships will be held on May 14-15 in Clemson, S.C., marking the 11th year the Tigers have hosted the regatta. The 2020 ACC Championship was cancelled last spring due to the pandemic. The Cardinals finished sixth at the championship in 2019, advancing three boats to the Grand Finals.
