Penalty Kick Downs Cardinals in Double Overtime
October 09, 2020 | Men's Soccer
Louisville dropped to 1-1-0 in conference play after a 2-1 loss at Virginia.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Squaring off against the reigning national runner-up, the University of Louisville men's soccer team lost 2-1 in double overtime at No. 5 Virginia Friday evening.
Trailing 1-0 in the waning moments of the match, the Cardinals got some late heroics courtesy of Pedro Fonseca. The junior took a pass from Aboubacar Camara, dribbled inside the top right of the box and buried a shot into the upper left of the net with 47 seconds left in regulation to level the score.
It was a team-best third goal of the season for the Brazilian forward.
Both teams managed a single shot in the first overtime, with neither finding the net, sending the match into the final 10-minute period.
In the second OT, the Cardinals had four attempts at the net, all of which forced the Cavaliers goalkeeper to make saves to keep the match even at one.
With just over one minute remaining, Virginia (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ACC) worked into the box and drew a foul leading to a penalty kick. Jake Gelnovatch was shown a red card for dissenting with the referee, leaving freshman Osmar Chavero to defend the attempt. The Cavaliers converted the penalty kick, giving them a victory in their season opener.
Louisville (1-3-0, 1-1-0 ACC) outshot the Cavs 18-9 on the night, putting nine on target. The Cardinals also had 12 corner kicks to just six for Virginia.
UofL is on the road again next Friday at Syracuse. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
