
Schmid, Murphy Among Nation's Top 25 Golfers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's golfer Matthias Schmid and John Murphy are ranked as two of the top 25 golfers nationally in the recently released PGA Tour University rankings.
Schmid, a senior, stands at No. 19, while Murphy, who returned for his extra year of eligibility, closed out at No. 25.
A native of Maxhuette, Germany, Schmid has put together an incredible career, posting a 70.86 stroke average in 35 career events and notched 18 top-10 finishes.He was recently named to Haskins Award Watch List.
A PING All-American Honorable Mention, Schmid finished second on the team with a 69.91 scoring average, which is the second-best mark in school history. He recorded two top-five finishes, including second at the Bearcat Invitational, shooting a 14-under-par 199 and a final round of 65, and third at Dorado Beach Invitational shooting a rain-shortened 67.
In 2018-19, Schmid set the previous school record for scoring average in a season at 70.55, while also leading the country in birdies. As a sophomore, Schmid played on the International Palmer Cup team and was selected to the Atlantic Coast Conference team. A second-team All-American honoree, Schmid tied the school record with 10 top-10 finishes. He posted his first career win by firing an 18-under-par 192.
The 2020 Byron Nelson Award winner, Murphy has already cemented his position as one of Louisville's elite golfers. He holds the third-best career stroke average in program history at 71.98, and is one of four players in school history to win a pair of events in a season.Â
The native of Kinsale, Ireland, ended the year with a school record 69.59 stroke average and earned a pair of individual victories during his senior season -- the first two wins of his career. He won the Bearcat Invitational by shooting a 17-under-par and fired a 7-under-par 65 to capture the rain-shortened Dorado Beach Invitational.
The senior was a PING All-Region selection in 2019 and 2020, a 2020 PING Honorable Mention All-American, as well as an ACC-All Academic Team selection and a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar.
