Cardinals Top Wake Forest 2-1
October 10, 2020 | Field Hockey
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sophomore Emilia Kaczmarczyk's goal in the fourth quarter lifted the University of Louisville field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Wake Forest Saturday at Jack Kentner Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in ACC play.
Â
The teams will meet again in a non-conference matchup Sunday at 2 p.m. (ET).
Â
Playing in soggy conditions and rain throughout much of the game, the Cardinals held an 8-7 edge in penalty corners and outshot the Demon Deacons 12-10 - each team tallied five shots on goal. Senior Hollyn Barr collected four saves in the game while Wake Forest goalkeeper Ally Butler had three stops.
Â
"Very proud of the grit and toughness that our team showed today," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Our leaders, Meghan Schneider, Alli Bitting and Mercedes Pastor, were superb at keeping our team in the game. Wake adjusted to the difficult conditions much better than we did, but again we found a way to keep playing and get the win."
Â
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter when junior Erica Cooper connected on a cross from senior Madison Walsh. Cooper's second goal of the season put the Cards on top 1-0 with just under six minutes left in the quarter.
Â
After an early offensive push by the Cardinals, Wake Forest (1-3, 0-1) opened its own offensive attack, but Barr picked up a pair of saves to hold the Demon Deacons at bay.
Â
The Cardinals took the 1-0 lead into halftime with the teams firing off two shots on goals apiece and Wake Forest holding a 4-2 edge in penalty corners.
The Demon Deacons quickly evened the score in the fourth minute of the third quarter when Anne van Hoof capitalized on a penalty corner pass from Alexis Grippo, tying the game at 1-1.
Â
Louisville would fire off eight shots and earn five penalty corners in the third quarter, but the score remained tied a 1-1 entering the final quarter of the contest.
Â
The Cardinals carried the momentum, drawing a penalty corner in the opening minute of the frame. Senior Alli Bitting got the corner started and senior Meghan Schneider provided the stop for Kaczmarczyk who rifled a shot past Butler to notch her second goal of the season and put the Cards on top 2-1.
Â
