Cardinals Finish with Eight Wins on Day Two of the Gene Edmunds Memorial
January 11, 2020 | Track & Field
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. --Â The University of Louisville track teams finished their final day of competition at the Gene Edmonds Memorial Invitational with eight wins and 17 top three finishes.
Â
'It was an honor for us to compete in the first annual Gene Edmunds Memorial Invitational," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Coach Edmunds made a tremendous impact in our sport and will be greatly missed. You never know what to expect heading into a season opener but we have a lot to be excited about coming off the weekend. The squads were able to win 10 events this weekend and had several other finishes in the top five."
Â
Gabriela Leon had two of the Cardinals' eight wins on the day. She started her junior year off with a win in the pole vault. Leon cleared 4.25m/13-11 for a decisive win in the pole vault. She immediately went to compete in the long jump where she snagged her second win of the day with her final jump of 6.04m/19-9.Â
Â
The Cardinals' swept the shot put on both sides.  Rashida Harris started her senior year with a win in the shot put. Harris won with a toss of 14.80m/48-6. Christian Buckley took the win on the men's side with a mark of 17.08m/56-0.Â
Â
Louisville also had a sweep in the men's high jump. Freshman Trey Allen made his freshman debut with a win, clearing 2.10m/6-10.  Teammates Anthony McRoberts and Luke Nichols finished with jumps of 2.05m/6-8 for second and third place, respectively.   Â
Â
Sophomore Kayla Alexander won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.45. Alexander broke the school record last night in the preliminaries with a time of 8.40. Also on the track, Sharnae Alston just edged teammate Brooke Raglin for the 60m win.  She clocked a time of 7.562 followed by Raglin with a time of 7.565.Â
Â
"Sterling Warner and Kayla Alexander led the way on the track with new school records in the 60 meter dash and 60 meter hurdles respectively," Cowper said.  "Brooke Raglin and Sharnae Alston fought through three rounds of the 60 meter dash and Sharnae was able to claim the win narrowly during the final. I was really fired up to see our sprints and hurdles squad get off to a great start this winter."
Â
Cameron Stephens rounded out the Louisville wins with his first win of the season in the 3,000m. Stephens won the event with a time of 8:41.82.Â
Â
The Cardinals will take next week off to prepare for the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 25.
Â
"We'll come back to campus and continue our early season preparation before heading to the Notre Dame Invitational later this month," said Cowper. Â Â
