
Cardinals Punch Three Tickets to Nationals to Open NCAA East First Round

Roman Kuleshov (men’s long jump), Ty McPhail (men’s pole vault), and Elsingi Kipruto (men’s 10000m) all clinched berths to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's track & field team clinched three berths to the NCAA Outdoor Championships to open competition at the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East First Round on Thursday.
Roman Kuleshov (men's long jump), Ty McPhail (men's pole vault), and Elsingi Kipruto (men's 10000m) all secured their spots at the national championship meet by finishing in the top 12 in their respective events at the regional meet.
Kuleshov punched the first ticket of the day for the Cardinals, putting down a leap of 7.74m (25-4.75) on his final attempt of the competition in the men's long jump to catapult up the leaderboard and book his second consecutive trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The three-time ACC champion will return to the runway on Friday in the men's triple jump along with Miller Jones, who placed 33rd in the long jump on Wednesday with a mark of 7.31m (23-11.75).
In the men's pole vault, McPhail qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time in his career, equaling his personal best with a clearance of 5.35m (17-6.5).
The four-time NCAA First Round qualifier broke through on the strength of a clean sheet that saw him clear each of the first three bars of the competition on his first attempt, eventually finishing in a tie for eighth place and booking his ticket to Eugene.
Kipruto secured the third and final championship qualification of the first day of action for the Cards, posting a winning time of 28:30.21 in the men's 10000m that took the previous facility record down by over 30 seconds.
The freshman will double back on Friday for the men's 5000m with the opportunity to become the first athlete in program history, male or female, to qualify for the national championship in both events.
In his first career appearance at the regional meet, Ryan Farrell advanced to the quarterfinals in the men's 800m, finishing third in his first-round heat with a time of 1:47.24. and earning the right to compete for a spot at the national championships on Friday evening.
Ethan Brouw also contested the first round of the men's 800m, finishing 35th with a time of 1:48.68 to wrap up his first season in a Louisville uniform.
Matt Giuliano rounded out the day with his first career appearance at the NCAA East First Round in the men's hammer throw, finishing 29th with a mark of 62.11m (203-9) to close out a sophomore campaign that saw him record four of the top 10 marks in program history.
The Louisville women will begin competition in Lexington tomorrow afternoon, with the Cardinals set to field seven athletes across four different events. The full schedule of Thursday's events for Louisville athletes can be found below.
