LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Playing in his first professional event, Matthias Schmid of the University of Louisville men's golf team fired an even-par 71 in the second round of the Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland on Friday. The rising junior will miss the cut line despite his solid round on Friday.
After shooting a 5-over-par on Thursday, the native of Germany was outstanding on Friday, recording four birdies and two bogeys to finish in a tie for 106th place after concluding play at 5-over-par for the two rounds of the championship.
The all-ACC performer shot a 33 on the first nine holes, recording birdies on No. 2, No. 6 and No. 7 to get to as low as 2-under-par for the tournament. However, the back nine wasn't as kind as Schmid carded a 38 after a triple bogey on No. 11.
