Matthias Schmid fires a 76 on Thursday morning.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's golfer Matthias Schmid shot a 5-over-par 76 in the Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland on Thursday.
The junior qualified by winning the European Amateur Championship June 29, Schmid earned a spot in the British Open.
Playing in his first PGA Tour event, Schmid bogeyed his first hole, but responded with birdies on No. 2 and No. 7 to shoot an even par on the first nine holes.

Hailing from Maxhvette, Germany, Schmid didn't fare so well on the back nine by firing a 5-over-par to sit in a tie for 128th place.Â
Schmid was also a member of Team International in the Arnold Palmer Cup last month after a successful sophomore season.
At the end of the year, he was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team while earning second team All-American honors, becoming just the fifth Cardinal to achieve this feat. He closed the season by setting the school's record for stroke average at 70.55.
