Matthias Schid earns top stroke average award for the second-straight year.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Coming off a fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships, University of Louisville head men's golf coach Mark Crabtree announced the final team awards for the 2018-119 season.
For the second-straight year, Matthias Schmid was given the Ted Schulz Award, which is given to the player with the lowest stroke average. A first team all-ACC honoree in 2018-19, Schmid finished with a 70.55 stroke average, which set the school's single-season stroke mark.
Playing in 13 events, Schmid has finished in the top in the top five on seven occasions and produced 10 top-10 finishes to help the Cardinals advance to the national championship.
The native of Maxvette, Germany posted a second-place standing at the NCAA Louisville Regional, including a school-best 66 in the first round. He owns one of the three individual wins over the course of the season. Schmid dominated the field at the Old Town Club Collegiate on Sept. 24-25, firing an 18-under-par 192 to earn his first career win.
The Condit Dow Award, which is given to the player with the highest grade-point average was given to Schmid and Trevor Johnson – the first time the award ended in a tie. Schmid was two-time AD Honor Roll and Dean's List honoree, while Johnson posted the same accolades academically.
The Jim Ferriell Award —given to most improved player— went to John Murphy, who finished with a solid 71.73 stroke average. The Dracy LeFort, France native placed in a tie for 12th at the Louisville Regional by shooting a 2-under-par. He closed the year with a single top-five finish and four in the top 10.
The Cardinals are poised to make another strong run next season, as the squad returns all five starters and return Keegan de Lange, who sat out as a redshirt a year ago.
