
Louisville's Schmid Named Second Team PING All-American

Matthias Schmid earns the highest honor in school history.
LOUISVILLE, KY- University of Louisville men's golfer Matthias Schmid been selected as Division I PING second team All-American, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Thursday.
The second team honor is the highest in school history, besting Derek Fathauer's third-team honor after the 2007 campaign. Schmid is only the fifth All-American in school history and the first since Robin Sciot-Siegrist was honored as an honorable mention in 2016.
"Matthias had a tremendous year, best in school history for an individual," head coach Mark Crabtree said. "His consistency throughout the season was so impressive.
He has such a strong desire for learning and improvement and it showed as his sophomore year was one of steady growth and development. Matthias fantastic young man who excels in everything he does. I'm so proud and pleased for him."
Schmid, who completed his sophomore season, set the UofL single-season record for stroke average at 70.55, surpassing the previous mark set by Sciot-Siegrist (71.44) in 2014. The 2018-19 campaign saw Schmid earn one individual win to go along with seven top five finishes and 10 in the top 10. Schmid dominated the field at the Old Town Club Collegiate on Sept. 24-25, firing an 18-under-par 192 to earn his first career win.
The native of Maxvette, Germany helped the Cardinals advance to the school's fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships. He posted a second-place standing at the NCAA Louisville Regional, including a school-best 66 in the first round. The Cardinals closed the year by finishing 29th at the championships.
