Boat placed second with team-best time against No. 5 Michigan and Michigan State
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following an impressive showing last Sunday, University of Louisville rowing's second varsity eight crew has been named the ACC crew of the week.
Against No. 5 Michigan and Michigan State in dual racing, the Cardinals' 2V8+ turned in the team's fastest time of the day with a second-place mark of 6:44.31, besting the varsity eight's time by 0.12 seconds. The race at Belleville Lake was the fourth runner-up finish for the crew in their last five outings.
"The team has worked hard to get all the boats firing this year," said head coach Derek Copeland. "Although the varsity eight fell short last weekend, it was great to see the other boats come together to beat Michigan State. The Big Ten is stacked this year and we will take anything we can get. This honor for the 2V8+ is well deserved and we look forward to building on their accomplishments. There was a lot of experience in that boat and they pulled through for the team."
The second varsity crew was composed of coxswain Margaret Geraghty (Sr, Dayton, Ohio), Samantha Stoll (Sr., Absecon, N.J.), Misia Partyga (Fr., Warsaw, Poland), Jordan Kraski (So., Arlington, Wash.), Caroline Lynch (Sr., Winchester, Ky.), Haylee Judge (So., Traverse City, Mich.), Abigail Davies (Jr., Northwich, U.K.), Mallory Burnett (Sr., Bargersville, Ind.) and Katie Beiler (Fr., Sarasota, Fla.).
This is the second time that Louisville, and specifically the 2V8+, has earned ACC Crew of the Week honors. The crew was previously awarded on April 4, 2017 for defeating No. 16 Indiana and Kansas in the Indiana Double Dual.
The Cardinals will now turn their attention toward the ACC Championship on May 17-18 at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. The regatta opens with the preliminary heats on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m., followed by the grand finals on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. In last year's championship, the Cards placed fifth overall with the varsity eight earning a bronze medal in the grand final.
