Louisville's Men's Golf Team Eyes the Postseason After Record-Breaking Regular Season
April 29, 2019 | Men's Golf
The Cardinals have 11 top-five finishes this season, including one victory.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's golf team has enjoyed tremendous success under head coach Mark Crabtree, and the 2018-19 campaign continues that trend.
In 11 regular-season tournaments, the No. 21 Cardinals posted a school record 11 top-five finishes, including one win and five second-place endings.
"It's been an outstanding season all the way around, featuring a number of record-breaking performances by the team and individuals," Crabtree said. "The team has collected the lowest scoring average in school history and have continued to play at a high level. We have been extremely consistent and competitive in each and every event."
Collectively, the Cardinals, who lead the nation in birdies and eagles, finished under par in 11 of 12 events, including scores of 20-under-par or better four times.
The Cardinals opened the spring by finishing second in their own tournament – the Louisville Cardinals Challenge -- finishing at 20-under-par.
Ten days later, Louisville picked up its only win of the campaign by destroying the field at the Old Town Club Collegiate with a score of 30-under-par. The victory was the ninth for the Cardinals since the 2011-12 campaign.
After closing in fourth at the Intercollegiate at the Grove, the Cardinals ended the fall with a second-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee and a third at the Warrior Princeville Makai by combining to shot 56-under-par.
The spring season was just as productive for the Cardinals, opening the second part of the year with another second at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate, and back-to-back seconds at the John Hayt Collegiate and the Stitch Intercollegiate.
"This is one of the deepest teams I've had at Louisville," Crabtree continued. We have had top five finishes by five different players this season, which is an indication at the amount of depth this team has demonstrated throughout the season."
The Cardinals guided by sophomore Matthias Schmid are primed to make a solid run in the postseason. The native of Maxvette, Germany leads the country in birdies with 155 and owns one of the three individual wins over the course of the season.
Schmid dominated the field at the Old Town Club Collegiate, firing an 18-under-par 192 to earn his first career win.
During his second season, Schmid set the all-time season scoring average at 69.88, while recording six top-five finishes and nine in the top 10.
Freshman Jiri Zuska is another rising star, finishing second with a stroke average of 71.24, the best-ever by a freshman in school history. He placed third at the Seminole Intercollegiate by shooting 6-under-par and had fourth-place finishes at the Linger Longer Invitational and the Stitch Intercollegiate.
The Cardinals, who are hosting the 2019 NCAA Men's Golf Regional, will likely be playing on its home course when the regionals begin on May 13-15.
