
Schmid Leads Men's Golf to a Second-Place Finish at the Hayt Invitational

Matthias Schmid finishes in a tie for third.
Highs winds and rain played havoc with the scores in the third round, but the University of Louisville men's golf team battled through the conditions to earn a second-place tie at the Hayt Collegiate Invitational Monday at the Sawgrass Country Club.

 Louisville and North Carolina were knotted in first place at even par after 36 holes on Sunday, but the Cardinals carded a 24-over-par final round to move into a tie with UNC for second. Tennessee won the team title by 13 strokes over Louisville and North Carolina. Entering the day in seventh place, Tennessee won the tournament after a third-round 294, which was better than anyone in the field.
Louisville opened the tournament with an 8-under-par 280 and moved to even par after firing an 8-over-par 296 to head into the last day with a share of the lead. However, rough weather caused all the scores to soar in the final round.
Sophomore Matthias Schmid posted his fifth top-five finish this season by finishing in a tie for third, despite shooting a 1-over-par 216. He placed in a tie for fourth at the Linger Longer Invitational with his score of 6-under-par.
This week, Schmid shot an opening round score of 65 and entered the final round at 6-under-par. However, due to the adverse conditions, Schmid shot a final round 77 to the the tournament at 1-under-par.
Junior John Murphy was the second Cardinal to finish in the top 15 by firing a 5-over-par 221 to finish in a tie for 14th place. Entering the final round at 1-over-par, Murphy battled with a 4-over-76 to post his best finish since a sixth-place ending at the Seminole IntercollegiateÂ
Freshman Jiri Zuska and Devin Morley each tied for 40th after shooting a 13-over-par 229, while Simon Zach tied for 49th after carding a total of 230.
Louisville returns to action April 12-13 at the Stitch Intercollegiate in Cary, N.C..
