Cards Sweep the Hammer to Kick off the Louisville Invitational on Friday

Kessler and Forrest lead the Cardinals with wins in the hammer
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Mitchell Kessler set a new personal record while Makenli Forrest set a new meet record as the University of Louisville track and field team won the men's and women's hammer throw to open the Louisville Invitational on Friday afternoon. While Aaron Johnson finished 12th in his collegiate decathlon debut to conclude the Tennessee Relays.
Kessler threw for 61.28m/201-00 to shatter his previous personal record of 55.65m/182-07 and win the event. All of Kessler's throws surpassed his previous personal best mark.
Forrest's throw of 63.08m/206-11 bested the previous meet record of 62.42m set in 2016 by Laura Schroeder of Indiana.
Also competing for the Cardinals, Carsen Cassell took fifth place with a mark of 53.62m/175-11 while Halee Hudson finished sixth with a throw of 53.30m/174-10.
Johnson posted two top-10 performances on the final day of competition. He took third in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.78 for 876 points and posted a seventh-place finish in the 1500m, crossing the finish line in 5:06.59 for 522 points.
The freshman also posted a new personal-best mark during his decathlon debut. In pole vault, clearing 3.25m/10-08 to surpass his previous best jump of 3.00m/09-10.
The final day of the Louisville Invitational will start at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow with the javelin throw.
