Cardinals Fall 6-1 to No. 25 Syracuse
February 22, 2019 | Women's Tennis
Raven Neely picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 25 Syracuse on Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in ACC play.
"Tough one to lose, we've played Syracuse going back to the BIG EAST days. We've had some battles in the past, but today they came out and executed a little bit better than us," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "We lost a lot of deuce points today, and I really feel that was the difference-maker. We weren't able to put any necessary scoreboard pressure on them because we were losing a lot of the deuce points. We've got to get better as far as doing exactly what we want to do on those deuce points."
The Orange gained the initial advantage in doubles as Sofya Golubovskaya and Maria Tritou defeated Chloe Hamlin and Aleksandra Mally 6-2 on court three, and Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez rallied for a 6-4 win over Sena Suswam and Dina Chaika at No. 1. Raven Neely and Diana Wong were up 5-2 over Dina Hegab and Guzal Yusupova on court two before play was halted.
In singles, Neely evened the score at 1-1 with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory over Yusupova on court four. The Orange then regained the lead as courts one and two finished almost simultaneously. Suswam fell to No. 42 Knutson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, while No. 71 Ramirez registered a 6-3, 6-0 win over Mally at the two-spot.
The final three courts came down to the wire, but Syracuse ultimately came out on top as Hegab prevailed over Wong 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 to extend the lead to 4-1 and clinch the match for the Orange.
In other singles action, Hamlin fell 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 1-0 (10-7) in a hard-fought battle on court five. On court three, Tritou beat Nikolina Jovic in a tightly contested 1-6, 7-6 (1-7), 1-0 (10-7) decision.
The Cardinals will be back in action at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Sunday at 12 p.m. for an ACC matchup against Clemson.
