
Schmid Rallies to Finish Second at the Sun Bowl Tournament

Matthias Schmid finished at 9-under-par to finish four shots off the lead.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville men's golfer Matthias Schmid fired a 3-under-par 68 to finish second overall at the Sun Bowl Marathon All-America Golf Classic at the El Paso Country Club.
Schmid fired three consecutive 68s during the tournamenmt to finish four shots behind winner Ludvig Aberg from Texas Tech, who won the tournament at 13-under-par – four shots ahead of Schmid.
Entering the day eight shots off the lead, Schmid battled back into contention with six birdies in the final round, including two on the first three holes. The Maxvhette, Germany native recorded three birdies on the final nine holes, but did bogey two of the last three holes.
In the final round, Aberg recorded three birdies and finished the round at 1-over to hold Matthias Schmid who finished second at 9-under and Mason Overstreet and Zan Luka Stirn who were at 8-under at the conclusion of the three-round, two-day tournament in El Paso.
John Murphy carded a 72 on Tuesday to finish with a 72-67-72=211 to place in a tie for 15th-place out of 34 golfers.
The Sun Bowl Marathon All-America Golf Classic is one of the premier amateur golf tournaments in the country. Some of golf's brightest stars have traveled to El Paso to compete in the tournament since its inaugural year in 1974.
