
Schmid Off to Fast Start at Sun Bowl Tournament; Murphy Sits in 11th Place

Matthias Schmid is 6-under par after two rounds of play.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville junior Matthias Schmid is tied for fourth at the Sun Bowl Marathon All-America Golf Classic after shooting 6-under through the first two rounds that were played on Monday at the El Paso Country Club.
Schmid shot 68-68 – 136 and will go into Tuesday's final round eight shots behind Texas Tech's Ludvig Adverg, who fired a 14-under-par 122.                                    Â
Aberg, who is from Eslov, Sweden and in his first season playing at Texas Tech, recorded his 62 in the opening round after making six straight birdies on the back-9 and finishing the first round with 10 birdies and at 9-under. He would expand the lead by shooting a 66 in the second round with a bogey-free round that saw four birdies on the front-9 before eight pars and a birdie on the back-9 to complete the day.
Schmid got off to a slow start in the first round, shooting a 1-over-par 37 after nine holes. He responded by going 7-under-par over the next 27 holes.
Teammate John Murphy is tied for 11th after 36 holes after shooting 72-67=139 to sit at 3-under-par for the tournament. After opening with a 72, Murphy played the next 18 holes at 4-under-par.
The Sun Bowl Marathon All-America Golf Classic is one of the premier amateur golf tournaments in the country. Some of golf's brightest stars have traveled to El Paso to compete in the tournament since its inaugural year in 1974.
Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, Justin Thomas, Notah Begay and Jerry Pate are just a handful of past participants who went on to have successful PGA careers. College All-America Golf Classic Alumni have combined to win 53 major championships and have earned over $2 billion in career earnings.
