The sophomore turns in the third best performance in school history
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville sophomore Ivine Chemutai wrapped up the cross country season at the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Chemutai finished 59th with a time of 21:00.7. Her finish ranks third in school history, behind teammate Dorcas Wasike's 14th place in 2018 and 29th place in 2017.
"Qualifying for the national championship this year has given me a great experience competing with some of the best runners in the nation," said Chemutai. "I had to fight today, despite the cold weather, and I made it. I would like to thank my coaches for talking me through trusting the process and every place counts. This motivated me each and every day to keep moving forward. Also believe in yourself and you can do amazing things. I am so proud to be a part of this team. Go Cards!"
Arkansas won the team championship with 96 points. Weini Kelati from New Mexico won the individual championship with a time of 19:47.5. On the men's side, BYU took home the team championship with 109 points. Edwin Kurgat of Iowa State took the men's individual title with a time of 30:32.7.
Chemutai wraps up the season with four top 10 finishes this season. She earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional, turning in a personal-best time of 20:18.8. She improved upon her previous 6K record time by a full 36 seconds, topping the 20.54.80 she turned in at the Pre-Nationals earlier this season.
The sophomore earned All-ACC honors this season with a 13th place finish and topped it with her eighth place finish to earn USTFCCCA All-Region Honors.
"I couldn't be more excited about the passion and effort that Ivine showed today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "She made a bold move running in the top 10 through the first third of the race and it paid off with the third best individual finish in our team's history. Ivine has grown so much as an individual and runner over the last two years. She has become a great representative of UofL athletics and I couldn't be more proud of her."
