November 21, 2019 | Women's Soccer
PROVO, Utah -- The 23rd ranked University of Louisville women's soccer team fell 4-0 to No. 4 BYU on Thursday night at South Field in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals wrap up a successful season with a 13-5-2 record while finishing fourth in the ACC with a record of 5-3-2.
The Cardinals started out the first half aggressive on offense. Allison Whitfield took the first shot in the first minute of action and then Brooklynn Rivers had a shot in the second minute that was saved by a diving BYU keeper.Â
Then the Cougars gained possession and had two straight corner kicks.  Niamh Nelson blocked one shot in the 10th minute and then Gabby Kouzelos made a big save in the 11th minute. Both teams traded possession the rest of the half, which ended scoreless.
BYU came out with more pressure offensively in the second half. The Louisville defense held off shots in the 50th, 51st, 55th and 56th minutes. Louisville's best chance of the half came in the 60th minute when Rivers had a shot go just over the crossbar.Â
Then BYU went on a scoring frenzy over the next eight minutes to go up 3-0 with 20 minutes remaining in the match. The Cardinal defense regrouped but it was too much to overcome. BYU was then awarded a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to go up 4-0. Â
The Cougars finished the match with a 19-9 shot advantage and a 9-1 corner kick advantage. Kouzelos finished with four saves, including three in the second half.Â
