Hernandez advances to singles quarterfinals teams with Salle to reach doubles semifinals
LAKEWOOD, Fla. - Sergio Hernandez led the University of Louisville men's tennis team on day one of the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic Friday. The sophomore advanced to the singles quarterfinals and teamed with fellow sophomore Fabien Salle to reach the semifinals in doubles.
In singles action, Hernandez opened play with a 6-2, 7-6(4) win over Notre Dame's Johnathan Small and went on to beat Michigan's Nick Beaty 5-7, 6-4, 1-0. He will take on Florida's Blaise Bicknell in Saturday's quarterfinal match.
Sophomore Fabien Salle and freshman Matthew Fung each rebounded from a first round loss in the main draw. In the consolation draw, Fung defeated Michigan's Teddy Oooster baan 6-3, 6-2 and Salle topped Michigan's Ryan Fu 6-3, 6-1.
Salle and Hernandez picked up a pair of wins on the first day of the tournament, outlasting the Naval Academy's Derrick Thompson and Andrew Ton 8-7 (5) and following with an 8-6 decision against Florida State's Richard Thongoana and Bryn Nahrung.
The duo advanced to Saturday's semifinal doubles match where they will face Florida's Joshua Goodger and Greysen Cicciatore.
