Cards get goals from four different players
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Four different players scored to lift the fifth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 4-2 win over Longwood Saturday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Â
The Cardinals (12-2) will wrap up a six-game home stand on Sunday when they play host to No. 6 Iowa in a 1 p.m. matchup.
Â
"We wanted to make sure that we were playing our hockey and not go into a tendency to go solo," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Longwood has a lot of very good individuals and good individual skills and that can take us away from our game plan. So we wanted to pass the ball, move off of each other and just connect well and have good balance of attack. We had some good moments. We were subbing in a lot of different people. That challenges us a little bit. But we have to get away from over carrying the ball in certain situations."
Â
Louisville got goals from senior Whena Munn along with freshman trio Margot Lawn, Minna Tremonti and Camryn Pichea as the Cardinals outshot the Lancers 17-3 in the game and held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Â
The Cards opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the game when Tremonti registered her first career goal when she connected on a rebound off the pads of Longwood goalkeeper Katie Wyman.
Â
With 1:07 remaining in the first quarter, freshman Mattie Tabor sent a feed to Lawn who connected on her fourth goal of the season, giving Louisville a 2-0 lead.
Â
The teams played through a scoreless second quarter and the Cardinals entered halftime up 2-0 after having outshot Longwood 11-1 with a 4-0 edge in penalty corners.
Â
UofL continued the scoring midway through the third quarter when junior Alli Bitting directed a shot into the circle from 18 yards out and Munn redirected it into the cage for her second goal of the season which extended the lead to 3-0.
Â
The Cardinals capped their scoring in the fourth quarter when scramble in front of the cage resulted in Camryn Pichea's first career goal, pushing the score to 4-0.
Â
The Lancers (6-8) quickly responded with a pair of goals in the next three minutes. Longwood got on scoreboard when Olivia Wawrzyniak connected on an assist from Briana Greene with just under four minutes remaining in the game. Less than two minutes later, Wawrzyniak dished a feed to Floor Schouten who brought the final score to 4-2.
Â
"Overall we were happy enough with the game, but we can for sure get better," said Sowry. "Then defensively, solid effort. It got sloppy near the end. Again, different lineup out there. Everyone has to take responsibility for their individual position. And then collectively you got to defend the other team a little bit better as well. So we were disappointed late in the fourth quarter."
