October 17, 2019 | Men's Golf
The duo has led the Cardinals to a top-10 ranking this season.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Matthias Schmid and John Murphy of the University of Louisville men's golf team have been named to the Fred Haskins Award Watch List – the only school nationally with two members on the list.
The Haskins Award is presented annually by the Haskins Commission to honor the most outstanding collegiate golfer in the United States.
Schmid, a preseason All-American, is off to a fabulous start to his junior season. The Maxhvette, Germany native has posted a team best 68.33 stroke average, with three top-10 finishes, including a season-best second at the Bearcat Invitational.
Murphy, a senior, has been one of the key to the team's early-season success, recording two top-five finishes, including his first tournament win at the Bearcat Invitational. He followed that up the next week by tying for fifth at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
The Kinsale, Ireland, native is second on the team with a personal best 68.33 stroke average after the first four events of the fall.
The Haskins Award winner will be named in early June. Winners of the Haskins Award have gone on to compete in 42 Ryder Cups, win 28 majors, and over 250 PGA Tour events.
