Men's Golf Has Lofty Goals as Spring Season Approaches
January 29, 2019 | Men's Golf
The Cardinals begin the spring season on Feb. 11.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After a successful fall season, the University of Louisville men's golf program is anxious to get back on the course for the start of the spring campaign.
That will get underway on Feb. 11-12 at the Mobile Sports Authority Invitational when the Cardinals hit the course for the first time since November, a third-place finish in Hawaii.
After that the Cardinals will face on their most difficult challenges, with trips to Tallahassee, Myrtle Beach, Jacksonville and the always competitive ACC Men's Golf Championships.
"There are three teams ranked in the top 10 of our conference," Tereshko said. "Duke came to Louisville this fall and shot an incredible score on our golf course. We have a challenge ahead of us and our goal is to bring home an ACC title before hosting a regional."
The Cardinals, who finished ranked 27th nationally, are coming off a tremendous fall, winning one event and finishing second in a pair of tournaments. UofL won the Wake Forest tournament and were second at the Louisville Cardinals Challenge and the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
"We are a team that can make a lot of birdies," sophomore Matthias Schmid said at Monday's Spring Media Day. "We have a lot of young talent and think we have the potential. It's important for us to play good golf and be able to drive the ball off the tee."
Schmid has emerged as one of the top players in the Atlantic Coast Conference, leading the league in stroke average after the fall season. Playing in one of the nation's most difficult golf conferences, the Maxhvette, Germany native posted a 69.73 stroke average and picked up a tournament win in the fall.
"Matthias is an exceptional wedge player," Tereshko said. "There are some guys on tour that wish they could have a wedge game like his. If we can get the other parts of his game to match his wedge play, he will be playing on the tour. He's only a sophomore so has time to improve, but he's an exceptional player."
While the Cardinals don't officially begin the spring in mid-February, UofL is in Florida for the week prepping for the start of the season, which hopefully ends with a trip to the NCAA Championships.
The Cardinals will host the NCAA regional for the first time in school history this May, and if they can continue their upward march, it will have that opportunity on their home course.
"We are hosting the regional for the first time this year," Tereshko stated. "It's a great opportunity for us to play on our home golf course with a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships in Arkansas. We have to make sure the guys continue to get better and not be satisfied where they stand. We have to keep the pedal down and build on the momentum from the fall."
