LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's golf coach Mark Crabtree knew he had something special in Matthias Schmid last season when the true freshman posted two top-five finishes.
In his 15th career event, Schmid picked up his first win by dominating the field the last two days at the Old Town Club Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Playing in his second event this fall, Schmid set the school record, and helped the Cardinals win the overall tournament by one stroke. Louisville won the event by firing an 11-under-par on the final day to overcome Wake Forest by a stroke, and the Cardinals picked up their third win in the last two seasons.
The Cardinals won the Cardinal Intercollegiate and the Warrior Wave Princeville Invitational last fall.
The Maxhvette, Germany, native captured the school's mark for the best 54-hole score, and won his first tournament by firing an 18-under-par 192, besting Wake Forest's Eric Bae by three strokes to win medalist honors.
Schmid's the first UofL player to win a tournament since Simon Zach captured the Warrior Wave Princeville Invitational last season by firing a 21-under-par 195.
Entering the final round one shot off the lead, Schmid shot a 7-under-par 63, birding the final two holes to help the Cardinals earn their first team title this fall.
"It was a great team win," Crabtree said. "Matthias made a 15-foot downhill putt on the final hole to secure our team title and he played exceptionally well for his first collegiate victory. I'm thrilled with the way our team has played to start the season."
John Murphy also played his way into the top 10 by shooting a 3-under-par 67 to finish in seventh place after carding a 69-67-67=203.
Jiri Zuska posted his first top-10 finish in only his second collegiate tournament, tying for tenth after firing a 5-under-par 205 (69-68-68) and Devin Morley tied for 26th after carding an even-par 210 (70-69-71). Zach tied for 57th after firing a 7-over-par 217.
The Cardinals return to the course on Oct. 7-9 in College Grove, Tennessee, at The Franklin American Mortgage Company Intercollegiate.
