September 21, 2018 | Field Hockey
Cards snap three-match win streak
The seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team lost 4-2 to Wake Forest in an ACC matchup Friday evening at Wake Forest's Kettner Stadium. The Cardinals fall to 6-3 (1-2) while the Demon Deacons improve to 4-4 (1-1).
Â
"We did not play Louisville field hockey at all tonight," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Wake was impressive. They wanted to win the game by playing hard, beating us to the ball and playing together. We need to come together quickly and not allow that to happen again."
Â
Louisville held a 2-1 lead midway through the second half, but Wake Forest capitalized three unanswered penalty corner goals to halt the Cardinals' three-match win streak. Â
The Cards struck first in the ninth minute of the game after earning their second penalty corner. Sophomore Bethany Russ connected on a rebound and lifted a shot that glanced off Wake Forest goalkeeper Isla Bint's glove. Her team-best fourth goal gave Louisville a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Demon Deacons answered 10 minutes later on a penalty corner goal of their own when Jule Grashoff connected on assists from Alexis Grippo and Megan Anderson to even the score at 1-1.
Â
The teams entered the break with the score knotted at 1-1 after Wake outshot Louisville 6-3 and held a 4-2 edge in corners.
Â
The Cardinals regained the lead after playing just over 10 minutes in the second half. Redshirt freshman Biz Allgeier sent a feed to junior Whena Munn who directed a shot that bounced off of a defender and into the cage to give the Cards a 2-1 lead.
Â
Wake countered with another penalty corner goal by Grashoff with 12 minutes left in the second half.
This time Veerle Bos and Megan Anderson provided the assists.
Â
Five minutes later another penalty corner resulted in a Wake Forest goal, this time Anderson connected on a rebound off of Ayeisha McFerran's pads to pull the Demon Deacons ahead 3-2 at the 62:18 mark.
Â
With under two minutes left to play, Grashoff added Wake's final goal of the game, completing her hat trick on the Demon Deacons' seventh penalty corner of the match.
Â
In the game, Wake Forest outshot Louisville 15-4 - including a 9-2 margin in shots on goal - Â and held a 7-2 advantage in corners. McFerran (6-3) tallied five saves in the contest.
Â
The Cardinals will continue their road swing with a matchup at Appalachian State on Sunday.
