
Cardinals Open Fall With Impressive Round at Louisville Cardinals Invitational

LOUISVILLE, KY-Â A trio of University of Louisville men's golfers secured top-nine finishes, leading the Cardinals into a second-place tie on the opening day of the Louisville Cardinals Invitational on Friday at the par-71, 7,101-yard University of Louisville Golf Club.
The Cardinals, who shot a 268, are tied with Wake Forest at 16-under-par, 11 shots behind the current leader Duke, which fired a 27-under-par 257. Western Kentucky and USF are tied for fourth after shooting a 7-under-par 277.
The round of 268 is the best for the Cardinals since firing a school best 266 in the first round of the Warrior Princeville Invitational last fall.
The threesome of Simon Zach, Jiri Zuska, and Matthias Schmid, nearly played error-free golf recording only four bogeys, 17 birdies, and a pair of eagles as the Cardinals played one of the best rounds of all-time.
Zach is tied for second after shooting a 7-under-par 64, firing a team-high seven birdies, including an eagle on the second hole. His 64 is one shot off his career-best round of 63 that he carded at the Warrior Princeville Invitational last season. He went on to win the tournament with a school-record total of 21-under-par.
The native of Prague, Czech Republic birdied five of the nine holes on the back nine to sit just three shots off the lead of Duke's Alex Smalley, who fired a 10-under-par 61.
Schmid is tied for ninth after tying his career best round with a 66 on Friday. The native of Maxhvette, Germany, notched three birdies on the front and closed the afternoon by birding No. 17 and No. 18.
Zuska, playing in his first collegiate event, is also tied for ninth with his 66, recording four birdies and an eagle on No. 17.
Trevor Johnson is tied for 48th after shooting a 1-over-par 72 and John Murphy is tied for 70th after carding a 3-over-par 74. Playing as individuals, Devin Morley is tied for 16thh after shooting a 2-under-par 69 and Hugh O'Hare fired a 2-over-par 73 to sit in a tie for 60th.
