LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The grind of summer workouts are over, and it's time for the 2018 University of Louisville football season to get officially get underway, which will happen with a pair of practices on Friday.
The first group of Cardinals will hit the practice field at 8:50 a.m., while most of the veterans will work out at 3:30 p.m.
"This is the best conditioned team I've had," head coach Bobby Petrino said. "We had a really good summer. We had our conditioning test last week and they blew it out of the water. I'm excited to get started."
While Petrino is enthusiastic about a lot of his returning players, and certainly knows what to expect from many of the returnees, the ninth-year head coach is looking forward to seeing the freshmen hit the practice field for the first time.
The Cardinals had eight early enrollees who practiced in the spring, but a bulk of the newcomers will make their debut on Friday. The rookies have been in the program going through summer workouts, but will hit the field for the first time.
"I'm excited to see the freshmen," Petrino said. "We've seen a lot of them in workouts and in the weight room, but we haven't seen them do anything in terms of football. It will be fun to get on the field and see how that looks. It will be exciting to see the guys who haven't been here through spring ball and how they adjust."
With former Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson making his debut in the National Football League on Thursday night, the Jawon Pass era will start on Friday as the Cardinals prepared for the opener versus Alabama.
.
The redshirt sophomore appeared in six games last season and showcased his ability in limited game action. This will be a different story for him as all eyes will be on him during fall camp.
"I just want to get better every day," Pass said. "It's going to be a long process, but I'm excited. I just want everyone to go out there every day stay healthy and ready to go. I don't want us to waste a day."
Picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference, outside expectations for the 2018 team are low, but the Cardinals don't pay attention to the noise because the outlook inside the Howard Schnellenberger Football Complex is always high.
"I think we are going to do a lot of good things this season, especially on offense," Pass said. "The demeanor never changes around here. We always have high expectations and are excited to get back on the field on Friday."
With the season opener taking on a different meaning against Alabama, the defending national champions on the schedule -- the excitement in the football complex is at an all-time high.
"I think they've had a really good summer. They've worked extremely hard. Our percentage of body fat is down and we are a slimmer and faster team. I like their attitude and like the leadership that we have with this group."
An Alabama native, Pass is excited to take on his hometown team to open the year. A highly recruited quarterback, Pass has pointed to this opener for the last couple of seasons."
"I've been expecting this game since I committed," Pass said. "I think I know how we want to attack Alabama. You have to be aggressive. You have to be fearless and have fun. They are a great program and well-respected. It will be a good game."
