Cards Prevail in Alumnae Scrimmage

The current squad defeated a team of talented alums 8-1 in a preseason scrimmage
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Redshirt freshman Elizabeth Allgeier delivered a hat trick, sophomore Madison Walsh tallied a pair of goals and junior Bethany Russ, seniors Katie Walsh and Taylor Stone added a goal apiece as the current Cardinals prevailed against a competitive alumnae team 8-1 Saturday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Â
"First of all, it's always fantastic to have them [alums] back on campus," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We always teach our student-athletes to honor the past and this program has been through it all. To have them back is pretty neat. Today we had a younger group, with some recent grads and they gave us a pretty good game… it was a great day."
Â
Both teams battled the heat and humidity as the sun beat down on the field in the first half of play. The current Cards jumped on the scoreboard early as Allgeier scored the first of her three goals in the opening minute of play. Seven minutes later, junior Bethany Russ gave the current squad a 2-0 lead. Another Allgeier goal and a combination between sophomore Mercedes Pastor and sophomore Madison Walsh brought the score to 4-0 as the teams entered the break.
Â
Allgeier's third goal of the day pushed the score to 5-0 at the 28:57 of the second half. Five minutes later, the alums earned a penalty corner and 2017 graduate Abby Grimes put her team on the scoreboard.
Â
Louisville answered with goals from Katie Walsh, Taylor Stone and Madison Walsh to bring the final score to 8-1. In the game, the current Cards outshot the alums 15-2 and held a 3-1 advantage in corners. Senior Ayeisha McFerran and junior Hollyn Barr split time for both teams and teamed for nine saves.
Â
Sowry was impressed with the current team's attack and offensive tempo.
Â
"We've had a great preseason so far," said Sowry. "We've stayed on track with everything we've needed to cover and there have been some pleasant surprises. Today gave us an opportunity to see some areas that we need to tidy up a little bit, but overall really happy we had some flexibility in the lines we tried to give a lot of opportunities to a lot of our players… I just want to give a shout out to our striker line for what we've been able to do since last season. We were young last year and they put in the work over the offseason and really believe in what we've tried to accomplish and they're lights' out the best line for us right now."
Â
With 20 alums in attendance and 23 student-athletes on the current roster, all of the players intermingled for introductions and a postgame photo, bridging the present and the past through the game and school that connects them.
Â
"If you asked a couple of the alums, they probably would want another year, because it flies by, and that's what we tell our current team – you've got to make the most of the opportunities that you have." said Sowry.
