Senior becomes Louisville’s seventh rowing All-American in school history
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville senior Sophie Schulz was named Monday as a Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Second Team All-American.
Monday's announcement marked the first career All-America award for Schulz, who was tabbed earlier this season as an All-ACC First Team honoree and included on the CRCA All-Conference Team. Schulz is the seventh Louisville rower to earn All-America recognition in school history joining Kirsti Harrison (2017), Morgan Dunham (2014), Erin Bennett (2012), Kristin Falovo (2008), Beth Daunhauer (2007) and Amelia Buhts (2005). Schulz also continues the UofL tradition of All-Americans who began their collegiate careers as novice rowers. Â
"This is a perfect example of what is great about novice rowing. Here is a young woman who did not know what Division I rowing was until her arrival to the University of Louisville in the fall of 2014," said Cardinals head coach Derek Copeland. "She goes to the walk-on rowing meeting and then to try-outs with no idea of what she's doing. From zero rowing experience to an All-American. It's awesome."
A Louisville native, Schulz competed in UofL's top boat throughout the 2018 season, set program history with the fastest 2k erg score the Cardinals have ever recorded and was an integral part of the Varsity 8+ boat, which placed third at the 2018 ACC Championship. It was Louisville's highest finish in the Varsity 8+ event in the program's four years in the ACC.
In addition to her honors on the water, Schulz has also excelled in the classroom earning All-ACC Academic Rowing Team recognition and becoming a three-time CRCA Scholar Athlete honoree. Since graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors from the College of Education and Human Development, Schulz is pursuing another of her passions at the UofL School of Nursing, where she will continue to contribute to great change in the world around her.
"Sophie is a great person and deserves great opportunities. I am grateful to the awards committee for recognizing her in this way," Copeland said. "She has just graduated our program and is continuing to prove that Louisville rowers are truly unstoppable."
Each year the coaches of the CRCA recognize the outstanding student athletes in each Division. Criteria for the award include:
•   The student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution.
•   The student-athlete must have rowed at least 75% of the season's races in the varsity boat
•   The student-athlete must be nominated by her institution
•   The Head Coach of the student-athlete's institution must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.
All-American athletes are selected from those athletes already named First-Team All Region. Criteria considered for selection include: boat performance, nomination rank, coach's comments, individual achievements, and 2k erg score. One coxswain is named to each team.
Ranked No. 20 in the final US Rowing/CRCA coaches' poll, the Cardinals closed their 2018 season with a fifth-place finish at the ACC Championship.
