Cardinals have a successful day two in Eugene
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Louisville track and field teams wrapped up the second day of competition at the NCAA Championships with three All-Americans and two new school records. Dorcas Wasike led the women with a runner-up finish in the 10,000 meters while Joe Delgado led the men's team with a fourth place finish in the decathlon.
"I couldn't be more excited about the way both squads came out and competed today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "We are truly blessed to have the opportunity to coach young men and women that come out and put everything on the line while representing our program and the University of Louisville."
Wasike, a redshirt freshman, clocked a personal best time of 32:11.81 to finish second in the 10,000 meters. She set a new school record, passing her previous record of 32:46.72 set at the ACC Championships. Wasike earns first team All-American honors, making her an All-American in track and cross country this year.
"Dorcas Wasike went through the mid-point of tonight's 10k just off her 5000 meter personal best and was still able to close the race and earn an NCAA runner-up trophy," said Cowper. "She's a tremendous young runner and an even better young lady. Cardinal fans should be excited to watch her races in the years to come."
Delgado moved up four spots on the final day to finish fourth in the decathlon with 7,852 points, setting a new school record. He broke his previous record of 7,655 points set earlier this season at the Texas Relays. Delgado saved his best event for last. He won the 1500 meters with a time of 4:22.36 to end the day.
"Joe Delgado battled through an incredible second day of competition in the decathlon to finish in fourth place overall," Cowper said. "It has been incredible to have him join us this year for his final season of eligibility. He and Coach Rasnick have put a training program together that saw his overall score increase by over 250 points. This is a tremendous capstone to his collegiate career and I'm sure we'll see him do big things in the future."
Freshman Makenli Forrest started the day off for the women in the hammer throw. She finished 18th with a toss of 60.81m (199-6), earning honorable mention All-American honors. Fellow freshman Gabriela Leon followed up with a 16th place finish in the pole vault. Leon cleared 4.15m (13-7¼) to earn second team All-American honors.
"Makenli Forrest and Gabriela Leon each handled the pressure of their first outdoor national championship with great composure," said Cowper. "They are a big part of our women's program and a prime reason that the future is bright. We look forward to watching them both represent UofL at the US Junior Championships next week in Bloomington."
The men's competition will conclude tomorrow. Seniors Jerin Allen and Damar Robinson will compete in the high jump, scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. ET.
