Cards will play eight regular season home games, host 2018 NCAA Championship
University of Louisville field hockey coach Justine Sowry has released the 2018 schedule which features eight regular season matches at Trager Stadium and culminates with Louisville hosting the 2018 NCAA Championship. The Cardinals will face six teams ranked in the top 10 including 2017 NCAA semifinalists Michigan and North Carolina.
Â
"We are excited about the 2018 season," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "As always, our schedule is loaded with quality opponents, but I look forward to seeing how our team will respond to those challenges. Once again, we will host the NCAA Championship and are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase our facility as well as our local community."
Â
The Cards will welcome former players back to Trager Stadium for the annual Alumnae Game to prepare for the next day's season opener, a neutral-site matchup in Columbus, Ohio against third-ranked, 2017 NCAA semifinalist Michigan on Aug. 19. The following week, Louisville will hit the road for Bloomington, Ind., to face the Hoosiers on August 24 before officially opening the home season against Ohio State on August 26.
Â
The month of September features four home contests in a two-week span. Louisville will start the month on the road, traveling to Richmond, Va., to play UMass Lowell followed by a trip to Newark, Del. where the Cards will take on No. 7 Delaware on September 3.
Â
The Cards will play host to 2017 NCAA semifinalist and fourth-ranked North Carolina in a contest that doubles as their ACC and home opener. They will wrap up the weekend with a non-conference match against California.
Â
Louisville will remain at Trager Stadium the following weekend, when the Cardinals welcome ACC foe No. 14 Boston College on September 14 followed by a top-10 tilt against Northwestern.
Â
After a four-game road stretch which includes games at Wake Forest, Appalachian State, Virginia and Ball State, Louisville will once again return to the friendly confines of Trager Stadium for its final three home games of the regular season starting with an October 7 matchup against Michigan State. The Cards will begin senior weekend on October 12, when second-ranked Duke visits Trager Stadium for an ACC matchup before taking on 2017 Mid-American Conference champion Miami (Ohio) in their home finale on October 14.
Â
UofL will wrap up the regular season with road games at No. 13 Syracuse, No. 22 Albany and Kent State. The Cards will then travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the 2018 Championship hosted by North Carolina.
Â
For the second straight year and the sixth time overall, Trager Stadium will serve as the host site for the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship. The event was also staged on the Cardinals' home field in 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2017. In addition, the NCAA Division II Championship was played at the facility in 2010. Located in Cardinal Park on the UofL campus, Trager Stadium opened in 2000 and was expanded in 2008 with a seating capacity of 2,500.
