May 07, 2018 | Track & Field
Both the men and women finish the season ranked in the Track and Field News rankings
LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The University of Louisville track and field teams finished the regular season ranked in the Top 25 of the Track and Field News Final Dual Meet Rankings. The Cardinal women were ranked 14th while the men were ranked 23rd.
"The Track and Field News annual rankings are intended to highlight teams that show balance across all event areas," said head coach Dale Cowper. "It's always nice to see our commitment to operating a complete track and field program gain recognition. I'm excited to see what each squad can accomplish later this week at the ACC Championships in south Florida."
The Cardinal women have seven athletes ranked in the top 50 of their events this outdoor season. Freshmen Makenli Forrest and Dorcas Wasike are each ranked in two events and rank in the top 15 of one event. Forrest is ranked 11th in the hammer throw and 32nd in the discus. Wasike is ranked 12th in the 10,000m and 42nd in the 5,000m. Carsen Cassell is ranked 32nd in the hammer throw. Alexis Gibbons is ranked 41st in the long jump while Holly Hankenson is ranked 42nd in the heptathlon.
The Louisville men also have seven athletes ranked in the top 50 of their events. Damar Robinson leads the men, ranking 10th in the high jump. Joe Delgado stands at 11th in the decathlon. Marcus Jegede and John Kolb round out the athletes in the top 25, ranking 17th in the long jump and 24th in the discus respectively. Devin Valentine ranks 32nd in the triple jump while Oliver Newport is 34th in the long jump. Jerin Allen is ranked 50th in the high jump.
Rankings reflect a combined indoor/outdoor season, but with a heavier emphasis on outdoor competition. To be ranked, a team must compete in one or more dual meets—defined as a scored meet between four or fewer teams. Teams are ranked on wins and losses, marks and strength and depth of dual meet schedule. Teams are rewarded for taking dual meet competition seriously.
The Cardinals will begin postseason competition at the ACC Championships this week, May 10-12 in Miami, Florida.
