COLUMBUS, Ohio - Entering the NCAA Columbus Regional with little postseason experience, no one knew what to expect from the University of Louisville men's golf team.
Playing with four rookies in the starting lineup -- in terms of postseason experience -- the Cardinals showed their youth by playing and up-and-down day after the first round of the Columbus Regional played on the par-71, 7,364-yard Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
"It was a good front nine for us," head coach Mark Crabtree. "We were three over on the front nine, which is respectable on this golf course. The weather came in and affected play. The 10th and 11th holes were disastrous for us, but we will be better there tomorrow."
Weather delayed the first round for over an hour, forcing the players to evacuate the course at 12:45 p.m. The Cardinals were tied for sixth place at 10-over-par when play was interrupted.
After a 45-minute delay, the Cardinals finished round at 16-over-par to sit in a tie for eighth place with Jacksonville – 19 shots off the lead heading into Tuesday's second round.
Perennial-power Oklahoma State leads the way at 3-under-par, while UNLV is second at 2-under-par – the only two teams to shoot under par. The Cardinals are seven shots from the fifth spot – the final place need to advance to the NCAA championships.
With heavy winds causing difficult play throughout the morning and into the afternoon, the Cardinals recorded just seven birdies in the round.
In his first event, Matthias Schmid led the way for the Cardinals, finishing in a tie for 28th at 3-over par. The team's top player with a 71.53 stroke average, was steady as the No. 2 player for the Cardinals. He opened play with five-straight birdies before suffering his first bogey on No. 6. The Maxhvette, Germany, native nailed pars on the next four holes before scoring his only birdie on No. 12.
Senior Nicolas Platret, a top-10 finisher at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships two weeks ago, scored the first birdie in the morning round with a three on the 427-yard third hole to pace the Cardinals.
The Dracy LeFort, France, played the front nine at 1-over-par to finish round one at 4-over par. He gave the Cardinals a little momentum heading into Tuesday's round with a birdie on No. 18. He drained a 15-foot-putt to move the Cardinals to 16-over-par for the round.
"It's a high quality golf course and we have to bring our game on Tuesday," Crabtree added. "We birdied the last two holes with Simon Zach and Nicolas Platret, which was good to see. It put a good taste in our mouths heading into Tuesday's round. We have to embrace the challenge."
Sophomore Devin Morely, who earned his way into the starting five last week, posted a score of 4-over par to sit in a tie with Platret for 32nd place, while Simon Zach finished the day at 5-over par to end in a tie for 42nd.
Sophomore John Murphy rounded out the top five by firing an 8-over- 79 to sit in a tie for 65th.
The Cardinals begin second-round action on Tuesday morning. Tee times will be posted after the conclusion of the first round.
