Simon Zach paces the Cardinals with a second-round score of 75.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – University of Louisville head men's golf coach Mark Crabtree was encouraged heading into second round action at the NCAA Columbus Regional at the Scarlet Course.
With a pair of birdies to close the day and move into a tie for eighth place, the Cardinals were in position in making a run leading into Tuesday's round.
The optimism was short-lived as the Cardinals shot 14-over on the front nine to put the Cardinals in 11th place after Tuesday's round. Louisville carded a 22-over-par 306 on Tuesday to stand at 38-over-par and 21 shots out of fifth place – the final position needed to advance to the NCAA Championships in Stillwatwer, Okla.
Oklahoma State continues to lead the way at 9-under par and Illinois moved into second place with a second-round score of 6-under par. UNLV sits in third place, while Northwestern is in fourth and Texas Tech holds the fifth position.
Simon Zach shot a team low 4-under-par on Tuesday to pace the Cardinals. The junior is tied for 40th after two rounds, shooting 76-75=151.
Matthias Schmid, playing in the No. 2 position, fired a 5-over-par 76 during his second round, but holds the top overall position for the Cardinals, sitting in a tie for 33rd at 8-over-par.
Devin Morley had his best round of the regional, shooting a 6-over par 77 to stand in a tie for 49th after totaling a 152 for the two rounds.
Nicolas Platret, the Cardinals' top player, was 8-over-par to fall into a tie for 58th and John Murphy rounded out the top five by shooting a 7-over-par 78. He is tied for 67th after his two-round score of 78-79=157.
"We got off to a poor start," Crabtree said. "The golf course didn't give us many chances to recover this morning, and we didn't recover today. When you play poorly as a group, it's not going to look very pretty."
The Cardinals recorded four birdies on the front nine, with Devin Morley birding No. 3 and No. 4, while Matthias Schmid and Nicolas Platret scored birdies on No. 9.
The front nine proved to be disastrous for the Cardinals, with 16 bogeys being too much to overcome.
The Cardinals improved on the back nine by shooting 8-over par – led by Schmid and Zach, who both shot a 1-over-par.
"I want to say great effort and determination tomorrow," Crabtree said. "We need to play with great focus. I expect them to play. Five of the six players are underclassmen and it's an opportunity to play on a tough golf course."
"We brought them here to compete at this level and we want them to jump out with a lot of energy and heart."
The Cardinals, who will be paired with Cleveland State and Yale, will be the last group to head out on the course on Wednesday morning.
