Platret Paces Men's Golf at ACC Championship

Senior fires a first-round score of 67 to pace the Cardinals.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Nicolas Platret shot a 5-under par 67, and the University of Louisville men's golf team is in 10th after the first round of the ACC Men's Golf Tournament at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C.
The senior, Platret is tied for fourth overall, just two shots behind Virginia's Danny Walker and Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans, who are the leaders in the clubhouse after shooting a 7-under-par 65.
The Cardinals, collectively, shot a 3-under par 291 to sit 15 shots behind Georgia Tech, which leads the way at 12-under par. Notre Dame is in second place, and Clemson, Wake Forest and Florida State round out the top five.
Platret, who tied his second-best career round, started fast from the first hole and carried it all the way through.
Beginning the championship on No. 10, Platret opened with a birdie and finished his first nine holes at 3-under-par by also scoring birdies on No. 14 and No. 18.
He was even better on the next nine holes by recording an eagle on No. 1 and birdies on No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7.
Freshman Matthias Schmid was the second player scoring under par for the Cardinals, carding a 1-under par 71 to sit in a tie for 23rd. After scoring birdies on four of the first nine holes, Schmid played the next nine holes at 5-over par.
The last three Cardinals, John Murphy, Simon Zach and Keegan de Lange played the round over par. Murphy is tied for 48th after firing a 4-over-par 76, while Zach shot a 5-over-par 77. De Lange rounded out the top five with a 6-over-par 78.
The Cardinals, who are paired with Virginia Tech and Boston College, begin the second round on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com and the tournament will be carried live on ACC Network Extra beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday, with Mac McDonald and Brandon Turner on the call.
