Men's Tennis Defeats Virginia 6-1 in ACC Opener
March 02, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The Cards defeated Virginia for the first time in program history.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In their Atlantic Coast Conference home opener, the University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated defending national champion Virginia by a mark of 6-1, their first win over the Cavaliers in program history. With the victory, the Cardinals (9-3, 1-0 ACC) extend their winning streak to six straight matches.
"Virginia has been the marquee program in our sport for almost a decade," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. They've spent more time in the last eight years at No. 1 than any other program in the country. They are the three-time national champions, so it's a great victory in the sense that we could overcome who they are and the program that they are. It's not just a physical battle, it's a mental battle, to be able to beat a program that dominant."
George Hedley and Ciro Lampasas gave the Cardinals the initial advantage in doubles action, defeating Carl Soderlund and Kyrylo Tsygura 6-3 on court three. The No. 18 duo of Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn battled back and forth with Gianni Ross and Aswin Lizen, but eventually clinched the doubles point for the Cards in a tightly contested 7-5 victory at No. 1. On the second court, Federico Gomez and Brandon Lancaster were tied 6-6 (1-1) with Ammar Alhaqbani and Matthew Lord before the match was suspended.
In singles action, Lancaster increased Louisville's lead to 2-0 with a decisive 6-3, 6-2 win over Alhaqbani at No. 5. Minutes later, the Cardinals took a three point advantage over the Cavaliers with Gomez's 6-3, 6-4 victory over Lord at No. 3. However, it was Ciro Lampasas who sealed the match for the Cards, topping Spencer Bozsik 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 at No. 6.
After falling 1-6 in the first set, Wynn rallied with a 6-3 win in the second set, and went on to defeat No. 18 Lizen at No. 2. With the victory, Wynn remains undefeated in dual match singles with a record of 9-0.
On court three, Rouanet downed Ross 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 to put Louisville up 6-0 over Virginia. The Cavaliers registered their sole point of the evening with Soderlund's 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Morin-Kougoucheff at No. 1.
Up next, the Cardinals head north to South Bend, Ind. for an ACC matchup against Notre Dame on Saturday, March 10. Match time is slated for 12 p.m. ET.
