LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's golf team carded a 7-over total of 583 on Monday during the opening day of play at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic to tie for ninth at San Diego Country Club.
The Cardinals fired a 3-under 285 during their opening round at the par-72, 7,033-yard layout. but struggled to a 10-over-par 298 in the afternoon round. Oklahoma State holds the lead at 23-under-par to take a 17-shot lead over San Diego State, which finished the day in second at 570. North Carolina and Texas Tech shared third place at 572.
Tech's Fredrik Nilehn carded rounds of 69 and 66 for a 9-under total of 135, putting him one shot clear of the field.
A pair of Cardinals finished the day in the top 25, with freshman Matthias Schmid coming in tied for 22nd place and senior Nicolas Platret ending the day tied for 28th place.
Schmid carded rounds of 71 and 73 to stand at even par, while Platret posted scores of 73 and 72 for a two-round score of 145.
Junior Keegan de Lange ended the second day tied for 37th after shooting a 69-77=146, while junior Simon Zach is tied for 60th after firing rounds of 72-77=149. John Murphy rounded out the top five by finishing tied for 70th after carding rounds of 74-76=150.
