Cards defeat Irish for first time ever with 4-1 result
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In their Atlantic Coast Conference opener, the University of Louisville women's tennis team made history with a 4-1 victory over Notre Dame Friday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals (7-1, 1-0 ACC) defeated the Fighting Irish (2-2, 0-1 ACC) for the first time in school history after falling in the previous seven attempts.
"It's been a build-up. I've been building this program up for a while now, and there's been some ups and some downs, but it's finally got to the point where we were able to break through and beat a team like Notre Dame," said head coach Mark Beckham following the match. "When you get a win like that, it kind of validates what I've been talking about."
The Cardinals opened the match with a strong victory in the doubles competition, led by Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg, who continued their strong season with a quick 6-2 win at first position over Brooke Broda and Allison Miller. The Cards finally wrapped up the opening point as Raven Neely and Sena Suswam topped Cameron Corse and Zoe Spence, 7-5, at No. 2. In the remaining contest, Ariana Rodriguez and Aleksandra Mally were leading Ally Bojczuk and Bess Waldram, 6-5, when it was abandoned.
In singles, the Irish tied the match with a fleet victory at No. 6 position, but that result turned out to be their lone point of the day. At No. 4 singles, Tiffany Huber dropped Corse, 6-3, 6-4, followed by Pahz's 6-4, 6-1 win against Spence at third position. The Cards then sealed the momentous victory with Neely's 7-6 (0), 6-4 triumph at fifth position. In the unfinished matches, Humberg was near victory at No. 2, leading 6-4, 5-3, while Mally was trailing at first position.
The Cards continue the beginning of ACC play Sunday as they travel to Pitt to face the Panthers at noon. Live coverage of the match will be available on ACC Network Extra.
"It's going to be a fun drive," said Beckham. "It's going to be a lot better now that we won, for sure."
