Field Events Score Big on Day Two of ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships
CLEMSON, S.C. -- The University of Louisville track and field teams picked up four wins and two school records on day two of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The women go into day three in the lead with 58 points while the men tallied 35 to stand in second.
"Our women's squad had an amazing day today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "The great thing is we were led by three freshmen that stepped up and performed at the highest level."
Freshmen Makenli Forrest and Dorcas Wasike led the women's side with wins in the weight throw and 5,000 meter run. Forrest picked up her first conference championship with a personal best heave of 21.58m/70'9 ¾" while Wasike ran a time of 16:34.03 to earn first team All-ACC honors.
"Dorcas had one of the best closing efforts I have ever witnessed to win the 5,000m," said Cowper. "Makenli capped the day with a huge victory in the women's weight throw. She held her composure and dominated the field from start to finish."
Gabriela Leon added to the success on the women's side with a second place finish in the long jump and fifth in the pole vault earning both first and second team All-ACC honors. The freshman grabbed two personal records with a jump of 6.11m/20' ½" and a vault of 4.25m/13'11 ¼".
"Gabby came out and scored 12 huge points with her runner up finish in the long jump and then she moved immediately on to the pole vault to pick up All-ACC second team honors and narrowly missed a national qualifier," said Cowper. "The way she handled the long jump and pole vault simultaneously was incredible."
Senior Emmonnie Henderson joined Forrest on the podium after her third place performance in the women's weight. Her personal best throw of 20.26m/66"5 ¾" earned first team All-ACC honors.
Carsen Cassell and Alexis Gibbons rounded out the women's side with sixth place finishes and second team All-ACC performances. Cassell threw a personal best of 19.50m/63'11 ¾" in the women's weight while Gibbons jumped 6.04m/19'9 ¾" in the long jump.
On the men's side, seniors Javen Reeves and Jerin Allen grabbed 16 points and first team All-ACC honors in the high jump. Reeves earned his first conference win with a leap of 2.21m/7'3" while Allen finished third with a jump of 2.18m/7' ¾".
"Javen Reeves continued the tradition our program has become known for, by picking up his first ever ACC title and Jerin wasn't far behind him with All-ACC honors himself," said Cowper. "Carlos Coleman led the men's running events with a school record of 47.40 in the 400 meter dash prelims. His seventh place finish is good enough to advance to finals at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday.
"Carlos Coleman was inspiring in the 400 meters with a new school record to advance to tomorrow's final," said Cowper.
Joe Delgado and Eric Fox wrapped up day two with 15 points in the men's heptathlon. Delgado bested his own school record with 5,653 points to win the heptathlon by 137 points. Fox finished fourth with second team All-ACC honors and a season best of 5,282 points.
"Our women's team will be in the title hunt tomorrow but we only have a few scoring opportunities left," said Cowper. "We'll have to catch fire again tomorrow to hold off Clemson, Virginia Tech, UNC, and Florida State."
