Cards face Marshall on Friday at 3 p.m., Furman on Sunday at 11 a.m.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a terrific start to Atlantic Coast Conference play last weekend, the University of Louisville women's tennis team returns home for a pair of non-conference matches this weekend at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals will face Marshall University on Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a meeting with Furman University on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Cardinals (8-1, 2-0 ACC) made history last Friday as they defeated Notre Dame for the first time in school history. After taking the opening doubles point from the Fighting Irish, the Cards posted three straight-sets wins to clinch a 4-1 victory in their conference opener. On Sunday at Pitt, the Cards quickly sped out to a 3-0 lead before the Panthers rallied to tie the match with one court still in play. In the remaining contest, senior Abbie Pahz overcame a first-set loss to hold off Luisa Varon and clinch the match for Louisville.
Pahz and her partner Mariana Humberg have proven to be the highlight of this season's squad, posting 13 consecutive victories at No. 1 doubles. On the singles side, freshman Maya Smith has opened her rookie regular season with a 6-1 record, while senior Ariana Rodriguez has prevailed in four straight outings.
Friday's opponent, Marshall (0-6), has struggled this season with only six players on the roster. The Thundering Herd, led by head coach John Mercer, have faced a difficult schedule that has included major conference opponents in Minnesota, Virginia Tech and Penn State. Senior Marija Bogicevic has paced the Herd, posting a 3-2 record in the regular season. In the all-time series, Marshall leads Louisville, 10-5, although the Cards won last year's match, 4-3, in Huntington, W.Va.
Like Marshall, Furman (3-4) has also taken on multiple power programs, including Wake Forest and Michigan State. Head coach Adam Herendeen's Paladins are looking to carry over the momentum from last Saturday's 4-3 victory at DePaul. Sophomore Katarina Kozarov has impressed in the first month of the season, posting a 4-2 mark. In the all-time series, Louisville and Furman are tied at two wins apiece. In their last meeting, the Cards topped the Paladins, 4-0 at the 2015 ITA Kick-Off Weekend event in Durham, N.C.
Live stats of both matches will be available on GoCards.com, in addition to scoring updates on Twitter at @UofLTennis. Full recaps of both matches will be posted following the completion of competition.
