Cardinals improve to 9-1 with victory over Thundering Herd
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In a non-conference meeting, the University of Louisville women's tennis team pulled away from a short-handed Marshall University squad Friday afternoon, topping the Thundering Herd, 5-0, at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (9-1, 2-0 ACC) took advantage of default wins in both singles and doubles to help put away the Herd (0-7). In the singles portion, Louisville earned four straight-sets victories to continue their outstanding start to the season.
"Whenever we can get a win over Marshall, I know we're doing some good things," said coach Mark Beckham. "It was a good win for us. I liked how we responded to them fighting back."
In doubles, Louisville began with one win after a default at No. 3 and then wrapped up the point with a 6-2 win by Raven Neely and Sena Suswam at No. 2. The remaining match at first position featuring Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg was abandoned tied at 3.
With the double point and a win at No. 6 singles, the Cards only needed two victories to seal the match, although the Herd prolonged the contest with tough play. At fifth position, Neely quickly dispatched Ana Marhuenda, 6-0, 6-1, to make the score, 3-0. The match-clinching wins then came simultaneously as Pahz beat Marija Bogicevic, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 3 and Humberg defeated Maddie Silver, 6-0, 7-5 at second position. In the remaining matches, No. 1 Aleksandra Mally and No. 4 Tiffany Huber both dropped their opening sets, but were close to forcing deciding frames when play was suspended.
The Cardinals remain home on Sunday morning for a meeting with the Furman Paladins (3-4) at 11 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
